Our 40K ‘Ard Boyz changes from using “Battle Points” with “Victory Points” as tiebreakers to using “Match Points” with “Battle Points” as the first tiebreaker and then “Victory Points” as a secondary tiebreaker.
What’s the difference? What the heck are all these kinds of points anyways?
Good question.
“Match Points” are awarded as follows: Match Win (or Bye) = 3 MP, Match Loss = 1 MP and a Draw = 2 MP.
“Battle Points” are points accumulated by completing the scenarios. They are defined by GW as either: “Massacre“, “Major Victory“, “Minor Victory” or “Draw“. There are bonus BPs in each scenario as well.
“Victory Points” are points scored by eliminating enemy units/models.
What’s the advantage of using MPs over BPs?
Big difference.
First, the only fair way of assigning a Bye is through MPs. Think of it this way: if you show up to an event and there is an odd number of players- someone is going to have to receive the “Bye”. If we use strictly BPs (no MPs), then what value would you assign to the Bye? Anything less than Major Victory (BPs) would eliminate that player from placing Top 3- so why would you even show up then?
Second and more importantly, by using MPs we will have an event that will be more enjoyable for everyone. Using only BPs, everyone would play in such a way to score as many BPs as possible- a win would not be enough, they would have to completely massacre their opponents. While this is something I’m sure GW is aware of (and I understand why), it is something that I am not comfortable hosting. I think a “win” is a “win” regardless.
