Warmachine

Shattered Grounds: Thundercliff Peak League:

First and foremost, I apologize for this delay.

Thank you to all the players who came out and supported the game and the community by playing in our previous league: “Shattered Grounds: Windlesss Wastes” (SG:WW)!

Looking back, I’ve learned so much from SG:WW (to read my feedback and closing thoughts follow this link) and promise to make “Shattered Grounds: Thundercliff Peak” (SH:TP) even better! We have a lot of changes to look forward to, so please bear with us! My focus will be on bringing new players into the game, putting things in place for the future and finally to add Sportsmanship and Painting Scores to the game. I feel that these are small changes that will have a dramatic impact on our game. We’ll all have to pull together to make them work, but I assure you we’ll all be better for it in the long-term.

New players are the lifeblood of any and all games. There will be many new players coming in that will require some support. All I ask is for some patience and understanding- we were ALL new players at one point, so please remember what that was like. If a new player is unsure of something or has a question, if I’m not there then please help them. Also, if you know someone that even has the remotest interest in this game or already plays the game but hasn’t been to the store, then please invite them out to our League.

To help these new players along, this league season will be a “Slow-Grow” or “Escalation” League- meaning we’re going to start with a very small point total and gradually add more and more points each week. I’m sure this will be a major point of contention, but I suggest you look at this as an opportunity to try something new or test out a warcaster/warlock that you wouldn’t normally play with. Challenge yourself to think differently and try something new.

In previous meetings, I’ve talked to a few people that were interested in becoming Press Gangers (PG). This is something that I think the Edmonton area could truly benefit from. I will gladly “sponsor” or help anyone who has a serious desire to help the Privateer Press community. Press Gangers are basically Privateer Press ambassadors- they host demonstrations, help new players, and help build a gaming community in their area. If you want to do this, please let me know. Also, you don’t have to be a PG to help the game community- small things like showing new people how to play or building new and interesting terrain also keeps the game alive and fresh.

Why bring Sportsmanship and Painting Scores into Warmachine/Hordes? There are many sides to this game: a competitive side, hobby or craft side and a fun side. I want to make sure that I acknowledge as many different players types as possible, while still maintaining some focus. So, I will be awarding prizes to these “Soft Scores” (areas of the league that are more subjective, yet I feel are very important). In my opinion, winning the Best Sportsman award is more important than winning the overall League, because if everyone has Sportsmanship on their mind when they play, then everyone should have a more positive experience. There is a place for competitive play, but it’s also important to recognize the value of good manners and having a pleasant demeanour. Painting Scores are another area that we’ve only briefly touched on in our previous league. What I want to do is encourage those who have an interest in painting and give them some form of recognition. Also, I feel that it helps people “get into the game” if every fig is nicely painted and they’re playing against someone with a beautifully painted army. Agree? Disagree? Send me your feedback.

Special thank you to Neil Dutton, without whom we would not be here talking about these new changes. Neil messaged with his vision of what our previous league should’ve been- and he was completely right. Thank you, Neil for making our community and gaming experience better! Also thank you to all of our Warhammer 40K players who I used to test the template of this very league- thanks for your input, guys! Also thank you to all of the Chaos Gaming players that have donated terrain and their League Leader Board!

So, here we go!

Regards,

Roy Kim
