FREE RPG DAY: June 18, 2011 At 1 PM

Free RPG Day LogoUPDATE: Our timeline is changing slightly- we’re going to host two D&D adventures: one at 1 PM and the other at 4 PM. Please phone ahead if you’re interested in playing. Thanks!Thank you to all of the people who called and expressed an interest in our Free RPG Day event!

Unfortunately, the bulk of our RPG crowd is heading to Calgary this weekend for the Calgary Comic Expo. So, the list of event we have available is quite short:

*D&D (4th Edition): 1 PM (room for 4 people)

*D&D (4th Edition): 4 PM (room for 4 people)

*World Of Darkness: 1 PM (room for 4 people)

This is our first year hosting Free RPG Day and hopefully it won’t be the last. Special thanks to our volunteer GMs- without you, we would not be able to host Free RPG Day at all.

A few people have called and asked about getting free materials, we will only have a few of each adventure to give out- the bulk I will keep and distribute amongst our group of players that went to Calgary- these are the people that support me with their purchases and I feel I would be doing them a great disservice by giving away materials meant for them to others.

Regards,

Roy Kim

UPDATE 2 (May 25): So far 13 People preregistered and I am holding 5 spots for those who mentioned an interest but have not yet sent me a list (Andrew, Adam, Lanng, Neil, and Mat). Hello!

Hope everyone is enjoying their long weekend!

Well, we’ve been busy here setting up for Steamroller! This is a turning point for us- we’ve hosted 2 “Shattered Grounds” leagues (Windless Waste and Thundercliff Peak) and we’re working our way towards “Summer Rampage!” If you can’t make it here for Summer Rampage, then I hope to see you at our next league called “Rotterhorn” which starts Saturday, June 25, 2011 at 1 PM and runs for 4 weeks!

FREE COMIC BOOK DAY (FCBD): Saturday, May 7, 2011!

fbcd-logo.jpg

Like Christmas, Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) comes just once a year!

This year that day is Saturday, May 7, 2011- so mark your calendars!

Eventhough our store opens at 12 noon and closes at 6 PM on a regular Saturday, our FCBD event will start at 6 PM and run until 8 PM! You’ll have two hours to visit us and choose some truly great comics- for free!

Not everything in the store is Free! If it were, then we wouldn’t be around for the next FCBD.  We received several small shipments of items that have been marked “FCBD” that we will give out to the general public. Due to these “small” shipments, we have a strict limit of 3 items per person- no exceptions.

If you have a comic account with us, there will be a special day that you can view all of the FCBD material before the general public- just ask us, but again this is for account holders only!

Why start our FCBD so late? Mainly because this year it falls on the same day as our “New Phyrexia” Prerelease (which starts at 10 AM and runs until 6 PM) for Magic: The Gathering– so we will most definitely be very busy. Rather than try to juggle two very large and high profile events, we’ve decided to stagger them so they don’t actually occur at the same time. Now, if you’re a Magic player, then this is a win-win situation; you get to play in a Prerelease and then enjoy some free comics afterwards!

So, I appreciate your patience and understanding, and I hope to see you at FCBD!

Regards,

iRoy

“Shattered Grounds: Thundercliff Peak” Starts Tomorrow (Saturday, April 23) at 1 PM!

Warmachine

Shattered Grounds: Thundercliff Peak League:

First and foremost, I apologize for this delay.

Thank you to all the players who came out and supported the game and the community by playing in our previous league: “Shattered Grounds: Windlesss Wastes” (SG:WW)!

Looking back, I’ve learned so much from SG:WW (to read my feedback and closing thoughts follow this link) and promise to make “Shattered Grounds: Thundercliff Peak” (SH:TP) even better! We have a lot of changes to look forward to, so please bear with us! My focus will be on bringing new players into the game, putting things in place for the future and finally to add Sportsmanship and Painting Scores to the game. I feel that these are small changes that will have a dramatic impact on our game. We’ll all have to pull together to make them work, but I assure you we’ll all be better for it in the long-term.

New players are the lifeblood of any and all games. There will be many new players coming in that will require some support. All I ask is for some patience and understanding- we were ALL new players at one point, so please remember what that was like. If a new player is unsure of something or has a question, if I’m not there then please help them. Also, if you know someone that even has the remotest interest in this game or already plays the game but hasn’t been to the store, then please invite them out to our League.

To help these new players along, this league season will be a “Slow-Grow” or “Escalation” League- meaning we’re going to start with a very small point total and gradually add more and more points each week. I’m sure this will be a major point of contention, but I suggest you look at this as an opportunity to try something new or test out a warcaster/warlock that you wouldn’t normally play with. Challenge yourself to think differently and try something new.

In previous meetings, I’ve talked to a few people that were interested in becoming Press Gangers (PG). This is something that I think the Edmonton area could truly benefit from. I will gladly “sponsor” or help anyone who has a serious desire to help the Privateer Press community. Press Gangers are basically Privateer Press ambassadors- they host demonstrations, help new players, and help build a gaming community in their area. If you want to do this, please let me know. Also, you don’t have to be a PG to help the game community- small things like showing new people how to play or building new and interesting terrain also keeps the game alive and fresh.

Why bring Sportsmanship and Painting Scores into Warmachine/Hordes? There are many sides to this game: a competitive side, hobby or craft side and a fun side. I want to make sure that I acknowledge as many different players types as possible, while still maintaining some focus. So, I will be awarding prizes to these “Soft Scores” (areas of the league that are more subjective, yet I feel are very important). In my opinion, winning the Best Sportsman award is more important than winning the overall League, because if everyone has Sportsmanship on their mind when they play, then everyone should have a more positive experience. There is a place for competitive play, but it’s also important to recognize the value of good manners and having a pleasant demeanour. Painting Scores are another area that we’ve only briefly touched on in our previous league. What I want to do is encourage those who have an interest in painting and give them some form of recognition. Also, I feel that it helps people “get into the game” if every fig is nicely painted and they’re playing against someone with a beautifully painted army. Agree? Disagree? Send me your feedback.

Special thank you to Neil Dutton, without whom we would not be here talking about these new changes. Neil messaged with his vision of what our previous league should’ve been- and he was completely right. Thank you, Neil for making our community and gaming experience better! Also thank you to all of our Warhammer 40K players who I used to test the template of this very league- thanks for your input, guys! Also thank you to all of the Chaos Gaming players that have donated terrain and their League Leader Board!

So, here we go!

Regards,

Roy Kim

“Magic: Action” = “New Phyrexia”

newphyrexia.jpg

Bring on the bad guys!

Looks like the Phyrexians have won the war! Wizards Of The Coast (WOTC) have announced the name of their third set in the “Scars Of Mirrodin” block. WOTC’s codename for the super-secret set was “Magic: Action” and then earlier this week they posted this on their main page:

http://www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/arcana/677

At one time, WOTC teased us by offering two possible set names depending on which faction won the war: “New Phyrexia” and “Mirrodin Pure“! And, with about a month before our Prerelease, WOTC has officially named the set, “New Phyrexia“!

Make sure you register in advance for our upcoming Prerelease (May 2011)- just follow the link on the righthandside navigation!

Check out this spoiler that WOTC put up:
