WarHammer 40K Painting Contest: “All Your Base Are Belong To Us”

sandbig.jpg

You could have the most beautifully painted WarHammer figure in the world, but if you forget to paint, flock and/or add sand to your base, it probably won’t win our WarHammer 40K Figure Painting Contest.

As of Thursday, April 15, 2010, we now have a total of 6 fine entries- all for different factions! I must admit they are all far “prettier” than I could ever paint a figure, but the thing that surprised me was that more than half (actually 4 of the 6 to be exact) were submitted without any work done to the base of the character; no sand, no flock (fake grass), no fake snow- not event paint was added to them. To me, this would put them at a distinct disadvantage from the models that had their bases worked on. So, it was easy to convince them to add some sand, flock, and/or fake snow.

So, if you’re interested in entering our contest and don’t have access to any basing materials, just drop by and if i have the time I can help you workon the base of your model. I’ve purchased 5 different colored sand (black, blue, red, oranage, and normal sand), have GWS’s burnt grass and GWS’s fake snow available to use.

Star Wars Miniatures: “Masters Of The Force” Launch Party: Sunday, April 11, 2010 At 1 PM Edmonton St. Albert

Star Wars Miniatures: Masters Of The Force

It’s the end of an era. By now I’m sure you know that Wizards Of The Coast (WOTC), the makers of Star Wars Miniatures, has decided not to renew the Star Wars license and consequently won’t be making anymore SWM after August of 2010. WOT will release one last SWM set called “Masters Of The Force” and then most likely discontinue their support of the game over the next year or so.

My thoughts are this: SWM has had an amazing run; no other miniatures game has been able to capture my attention like this one has (with the possible exception of WarHammer 40K). Rather than treat this Launch Party as a “swan song” or a farewell, why not look at this as one last time to get together and celebrate the release of final set?

For those of you looking to complete your sets, we have boosters and cases (12 boosters) now available for sale!

And The Winner (Of Our Terrain Building Contest) Is…

And The Winner Is

The winner of our first Terrain Building Contest is: BRYAN F.! Bryan walked away with the first place prize of a $20 gift card with 31 votes (an average of 2.58 votes/day)! Great job, Bryan! Adriaan R. came in second place with 18 votes (1.8 votes/day) and received a $10 gift card for his beautiful terrain piece. Tim M. was third with 17 votes (3.4 votes/day), Karl P. was fourth with 8 votes (1.41 votes/day), Marco U. was tied for fifth with 5 votes (0.71 votes/day) and Kyle D had 5 votes (5 votes/day)!

Thanks to all who entered, I hope you had a great time putting together your entries! We will definiately put your terrain to good use in all of our upcoming events!

I do have a few suggestions for anyone who wants to enter in our future painting contests and terrain building contests:

1. Enter Early: part of the reason for Bryan’s succes was that he was the first to enter and had the longest amount of time in the showcase, therefore more people saw his entry and consequently more people voted for him.

2. Bring Friends: It’s easier for people who live close by, but the purpose for this contest was to give our WarHammer events some more exposure and show people how creative and fun the game really is! Bringing family, friends, classmates, neighbors, etc was a big part of why Bryan won.

3. Be Unique: Your entry has to stand out in some way. Using vibrant colors or having a dynamic design really helps getting people to notice you.

4. Get Help: Don’t be afraid to ask for help. I’m sure most (if not all) our entrants received help from a parent or a friend. Having more people involved in your project will give you a larger pool of talent to work with. If I have the time, I am totally willing to help anyone entered in our future contests out too.

5. Have A Plan: Start with a clear idea of what you want to do and then make a plan so that you can reach that goal. Get it down on paper so you don’t forget and that way it will be easier for other people on your team to understand what you’re trying to do.

Thanks again, everyone and I hope to see you all at our WarHammer 40K Painting Contest!

Regards,

iRoy

Bryan: 2, Roy: 0

Crying Baby

Theres nothing more humbling than losing a game to a twelve year old.

Played two games of WH 40K on the weekend with Bryan, a Tyranid player. In our first game, you could say everything went downhill right after I rolled my first dice. I can t take anything away from, Bryan- he played very strategically and destroyed me within 3 turns. Our second game went a little better, but the end result was the same.

Had a ton of fun playing WH 40K, if you or anyone you know may be interested, just send them my way and I’ll do the best I can to help them get started.

iRoy

Terrain Building Contest Entries Are Coming In Now!

116.JPG115.JPGpicture-129.jpgterrain1.jpgAdriaankyledugas.JPG

There’s still lots of time left to enter, if you want to build an entry in our Terrain Building Contest don’t hesitate- phone/e-mail me right away and I’ll reserve a spot for you.

(Saturday, March 27, 2010) Kyle Dugas was just here and you won’t believe how increidble his entry looks! With the help of his dad, Kyle put together a Space Marine Bunker (Karl Peterson also built a bunker pictured above) made from styrofoam and painted to look exactly like concrete! This piece is gorgeous and totally functional- I can see myself using this in a tournament! Nice work, Kyle!

(Tuesday, March 23, 2010) The piece submitted by Tim has got to be the most realistic looking out of all of our entries. Tim made his hill out of plaster (the compound that people use on drywall to smooth out all of the imperfections). Beautiful work, Tim!

(Sunday, March 21, 2010) Wow, Marco submitted an amazing faction specific terrain piece based on a Tyranid birth chamber! This entry makes me think of “Jurassic Park,Aliens and KFC all at the same time.

(Sunday, March 21, 2010) Karl just dropped off his entry and this piece is probably the most functional out of all the entries! Karl made a Bunker. which is a fortified area, troops can enter through the side and then shoot from any side of the bunker! The best part is that there is enough space so that anyone can easily move their models around if they need to. The top or roof of the bunker can also be used as another place to shoot from or a landing pad for your jetbikes or jump pack infantry. Great entry!

(Thursday, March 18, 2010) Pictured above is Adriaan’s entry- it is spectacular! It’s made from a single piece of styrofoam insulation carved carefully with an exactoknife. The brick work or cobble stone pattern was made using a sharp pencil and then further defined with a more blunt pencil. Great work, Adriaan!

(Tuesday, March 16, 2010) Then there’s Bryan’s entry, lots of really nice texture in the blast area and the single black rock totally brings out the molten/charred center of the piece. Beautiful job, Bryan!

Remember: these terrain pieces will be usable in our upcoming events! Feeling creative? Enter now!
