40K ‘Ard Boyz Results:

‘Ard Boyz 40K

Hello!

Hope everyone had fun at our 40K’ Ard Boyz event that took place yesterday, Sunday, August 14! We had 21 sign up but sadly only 15 showed: my guess is a mix of good weather, wedding(s), summer movies, and summer festivals lured these peeps away.

In any case, here’s our final standings, congrats to the Top 3 who move onto the next round in September:

1. Darrell D: 9 MP, 60 BP, 6972 VP

2. David S: 8 MP, 47 BP, 4767 VP

3. Mat K:  7 MP, 56 BP, 3711 VP

4. Paul L*: 8 MP, 48 BP, 5770 VP

5. Matt D: 7 MP, 48 BP, 3998 VP

6. Brian S: 7 MP, 45 BP, 5770 VP

7. Rob T: 7 MP, 18 BP, 1868 VP

8. Ryan C: 6 MP, 27 BP, 2372 VP

9. Ron B: 6 MP, 12 BP, 1707 VP

10. Mike R: 5 MP, 38 BP, 5087 VP

11. Tim F: 5 MP, 20 BP, 2943 VP

12. Lea-Anne W: 5 MP, 13 BP, 2227 VP

13. Nick G: 3 MP, 11 BP, 1858 VP

Drop. Sam H: 4 MP, 14 BP, 2036 VP

Drop. Mitchell F: 2 MP, 9 BP, 3008 VP

*Note: Paul L qualified on Saturday at another venue and very graciously stepped down to 4th place from 2nd place, so that another player could move onto the Semi Finals in September.

I had a blast hosting this event, it was great to meet all of the new/old players! Hopefully, we can meet again in the near future!

Semi-Finals: my GW sales rep called today and I asked once again why we weren’t listed as a  Semi Final location on their website. His response was there isn’t enough demand for them to run a Semi Final in our region. So, Ontario gets 2 (because they have 15 prelim locations) followed by BC and Quebec with 1 a piece. There’s always next year.

Looking for feedback! Send me an e-mail or drop by!

Roy Kim

40K ‘Ard Boyz Update:

Warhammer 40K

http://www.thundergroundcomics.com/?page_id=393

Our 40K ‘Ard Boyz format is starting to look like the prelim script to the next Superman movie: there have been so many revisions and updates- how do you know which is the final draft?

That’s where I come in!

This event is a “Work-In-Progress” (WIP); meaning that when I was setting it up, I was not expecting 20 people to sign up- so MPs worked for me and made sense. Now that we have 20 (if they all actually show up), we will obviously have to use a more exact method to get a standings for these players. Since we won’t be able to do a finals round, tiebreakers are our only other option.

If you’re confused by this or even worse frustrated, then let me ask you a question:

Would you rather be told upfront HOW an event is going to work or would you rather find out how standing will be determined AFTER you’ve played?

Well, I hope everyone reads these updates and has their army lists in before Friday- don’t wait until the last minute, get those lists in on time! If I don’t have it in hands (or inbox) by Friday night, your place will get passed onto the next person in line.

Regards

40K ‘Ard Boyz Rules And Format Are Up!

‘Ard Boyz 40K

Our 40K ‘Ard Boyz changes from using “Battle Points” with “Victory Points” as tiebreakers to using “Match Points” with “Battle Points” as the first tiebreaker and then “Victory Points” as a secondary tiebreaker.

What’s the difference? What the heck are all these kinds of points anyways?

Good question.

Match Points” are awarded as follows: Match Win (or Bye) = 3 MP, Match Loss = 1 MP and a Draw = 2 MP.

Battle Points” are points accumulated by completing the scenarios. They are defined by GW as either: “Massacre“, “Major Victory“, “Minor Victory” or “Draw“. There are bonus BPs in each scenario as well.

Victory Points” are points scored by eliminating enemy units/models.

What’s the advantage of using MPs over BPs?

Big difference.

First, the only fair way of assigning a Bye is through MPs. Think of it this way: if you show up to an event and there is an odd number of players- someone is going to have to receive the “Bye”. If we use strictly BPs (no MPs), then what value would you assign to the Bye? Anything less than Major Victory (BPs) would eliminate that player from placing Top 3- so why would you even show up then?

Second and more importantly, by using MPs we will have an event that will be more enjoyable for everyone. Using only BPs, everyone would play in such a way to score as many BPs as possible- a win would not be enough, they would have to completely massacre their opponents. While this is something I’m sure GW is aware of (and I understand why), it is something that I am not comfortable hosting. I think a “win” is a “win” regardless.

Warmachine/Hordes Steamroller: Saturday, July 30 At 12 Noon

new-steamroller.jpg

EDIT (July 25): So many grammatical and selling errors… me am bad righter

On Saturday, July 30 at 12 Noon we will be hosting our second Steamroller event for Privateer Press’ fan-fave game Warmachine/Hordes!

I have a few small changes in mind that will both speed things up and make things easier for everyone involved:

*“Pen-Paper Record Keeping”: that’s right we’re taking a full step backwards and using good old fashioned pen and paper to record our results and put together our standings

*“Bring-Your-Own-Terrain”: Not everyone has the time to both paint their army AND make terrain, but I’d like to see what terrain pieces you’re using at home! If you don’t have any terrain, no problem! This is optional =)

*“Flight System”: I will be borrowing elements from Magic: The Gathering’s events scene and combining it with my own “Flight” system: basically, we will have everyone separated into “Pools” or “Flights” of Eight players. During the three rounds of Swiss, players will only play against other players in their pool/flight. After we have a finished our 3 rounds and put together our standings, we will then do a Top Four or Top Two cut (depending on the number of undefeated players) from all of the pools/flights who will then be entered into an Elimination Finals round.

*Edmonton St. Albert Pressganger: Didn’t think finding a preganger would be this hard. If you’re interested, please send me a message!

*“Can’t Find Something?”: I can help! E-mail me your list of figs that you can’t find and I may be able to get them for you. In order for me to have them unhand and ready before the event, please let me know before Tuesday!

*Positive Feedback: I take negative feedback like a champ- it’s a good way for me to learn new things and make future events better. But, I’d like to hear what you “LIKE” about our events and if you had fun- tell others about us too! Is this shameless self-promotion? Absolutely! I think we need to hear from everyone and we need to hear the good as well as the bad- right, Ryan?

*Why No Trophies This Time, Roy???: Good question, I’d like to use these 3 trophies to promote our upcoming events. They are expensive and I was fortunate to have them here before the event, (thank you local Canadian distributor!). So, if its okay with everyone, we will use them in our next Steamroller which takes place in October 2011!

*READ THIS DOCUMENT: Surprised by how many people didn’t read my previous Steamroller post- in fact, no one may be reading this post… asfjefbjebggnwrgnklwgnklwn Take the 2 minutes to read this document so that when you play in our Steamroller event, you’ll know what’s going on!

So, here we go!

Roy Kim

“Descent” On Sunday, July 17 at 1 PM

descent.jpgAnyone interested in playing some “Descent: Journey In The Dark” from Fantasy Flight on Sunday, July 17, 2011 at 1 PM?

”Descent” is a boardgame that pits a group of players using classic fantasy archetypes (cleric, ranger, warrior, mage) vs the Overlord, the Dungeon Master Game Master (the player that controls the monsters on the board).

This game really appeals to those who like building a character like in an RPG or those who like to work within a group to complete interesting puzzles and/or battle fierce creatures. If you enjoy this type of game, please send me a message!

iRoy
